online course
a new yoga
This online course was created with two main purposes in mind. Firstly, I wanted to share my unconventional approach to yoga and give you the chance to experience it for yourself. Secondly, I wanted to create a resource that was specifically tailored to yoga novices, so that they could build a solid and safe practice right from the outset.
It’s worth noting that even though this course is not exclusively for beginners, it serves as an introduction to a form of yoga that deviates significantly from the mainstream. So if you’re an experienced yogi or have already completed a teacher training, be prepared to have your preconceived notions challenged and your perspectives broadened. This course is an excellent opportunity for personal and professional growth alike.
Moreover, the course has been endorsed by the Yoga Alliance’s YECP program and entitles current and aspiring yoga teachers to 25 continuing education hours. Upon successfully completing the course content and assessment, you’ll be awarded a certificate that signifies your accomplishment.
This course is structured into six modules, including lectures, practice videos and the accompanying e-Book “A new yoga”.
Module 1 | Getting the most from this course
Learning outcomes for this module
- To set you up for success and enjoyment in this course and future learning.
- You’ll get to know who I am and some insight into why my approach is a little different to the mainstream in yoga today.
- We’ll explore learning styles, listening skills, and emotional intelligence.
Module 2 | What is yoga anyway?
Learning outcomes for this module
- To determine your definition of the word yoga, learn where yoga comes from, its essential history, and the interesting links to Chinese yoga, Qigong and the martial arts.
- Also, in this chapter, you will get an idea of the basic principles of yoga philosophy, that is, the reasons we practice yoga in the first place.
- Finally, we will learn how we can apply these principals in both our practice and day-to-day lives to maybe make us happier and healthier people in all ways.
Module 3 | How to practice well
Learning outcomes for this module
- To be able to have a safe, fun, relaxing and enjoyable yoga practice at home, or when participating in someone else’s classes either in real life or online.
- This module will cover briefly how to use the body safely and functionally whenever you practise.
- This module will also teach you how to breathe for the maximum advantage on and off the mat.
Module 4 | The human condition
Learning outcomes for this module
- To achieve a safer, more energetic and enjoyable practice, we have to learn the basics of human anatomy and physiology. If we don’t have this understanding, we leave ourselves liable for injury and potential physical degeneration.
- In this module you will gain a functional knowledge of the different main joint complexes of the body.
- This module will also reinforce the reasons for relaxing more, breathing well, and practising in the way that is outlined throughout this course.
Module 5 | A take-home practice
Learning outcomes for this module
- Here, you will discover a handful of primary yoga sequences you can take home and make a part of your daily practice.
- We will cover joint movements, spinal movements and two variations for a cool-down sequence—everything you need to have a well-rounded, short and simple practice. These sequences are designed to prepare the body for more strenuous work, maybe like your regular practice, and to help guide your relaxation at the end.
Module 6 | Putting it all together
Learning outcomes for this module
- Let’s briefly put all of these ideas together and talk about how we can take the lessons from this course offline and into the real world.
- In learning how to apply these lessons away from yoga, we can hopefully realise the potential of a healthier, more flexible body, more liveable breath, and some mental tracks to keep us happy and calm into the future.
